The test drive is the moment a car stops being an advert and shows how it actually drives. Most buyers treat it like a joyride - two corners around the block and “it feels nice”. That’s a mistake. A good test drive is a diagnostic test in which you deliberately provoke the car into revealing its faults. Below I break it into stages, exactly the way I run it on every car - from the cold start to a brake test on an empty car park.
Before you get in - the cold start
This is the most important 10 seconds of the whole test drive, which is why I arrange to see the car cold, first thing in the morning. A seller who “warmed the engine up so it’s ready” is often hiding precisely what you’d hear on a cold engine.
What to watch for when firing up a cold engine:
- A tapping noise from the top of the engine for the first few seconds - worn hydraulic lifters or low oil pressure. If it fades quickly it’s a warning; if it stays, it’s a more serious problem.
- Blue smoke on start-up - oil getting into the combustion chamber (valve stem seals, worn rings).
- Black smoke - an over-rich mixture, an injection or turbo issue (diesels).
- Thick white smoke that doesn’t clear once warm - a head gasket, with oil mixing into the coolant. One of the most expensive verdicts.
- Dashboard warning lights - on ignition they should all light up, then go out after start-up. If one never lights at all, the seller may have “killed” it on purpose (e.g. a removed check-engine bulb).
At a standstill - before you move off
The engine is running, you’re still parked. Use it:
- Idle speed - it should be even and steady. A floating idle points to an intake leak or a throttle body issue.
- Press and release the clutch (manual) a few times - listen for squeaks or grinding, and check the bite point isn’t suspiciously high (a worn clutch disc).
- Air conditioning - set it to max and check whether it actually cools and how quickly.
- Electrics - windows, mirrors, heated elements, infotainment. Small things, but fixing them can cost more than you’d expect.
In town - low speeds
The first kilometres are a gearbox and drivetrain test. Drive calmly, but listen and feel carefully:
- Manual - select every gear in turn. Stiff engagement, grinding, or a gear jumping out under load are signs of worn synchros or clutch.
- Conventional automatic - shifts should be smooth and barely noticeable. Jerking, a kick on the change, or “slipping” (revs rise, speed doesn’t) is an alarm.
- DSG / dual-clutch - at low speeds and pulling away uphill, watch for jerking and vibration. Typical of worn mechatronics clutches, and the repair is costly.
- Jerking when pulling away - can mean worn engine mounts or a clutch problem.
Steering and handling
On a straight, level stretch, gently let go of the wheel (safely, on an empty road):
- The car pulls to one side - misaligned geometry, uneven tyre pressures, or accident damage (a bent body).
- Play in the steering - turn it slightly left and right while stationary; a large dead zone means a worn steering system.
- Clunking when turning at low speed (e.g. leaving a car park) - CV joints, a classic on front-wheel-drive cars.
- Steering vibration at speed - unbalanced wheels, but also worn bearings or a warped brake disc.
On the open road - higher speeds
Get onto a road where you can legally reach 80-100 km/h. This is where things invisible in town come out:
- Stability at speed - the car should track straight without constant correction.
- Engine under load - accelerate harder. A drop in power, hesitation, or smoke in the mirror under load betray the turbo, injection, or a clogged filter.
- A drone that rises with speed - worn wheel bearings. It changes when you steer gently left or right.
- Engine temperature - the needle should reach normal and stay there. Temperature swings mean a cooling system problem.
Braking and suspension
On an empty, safe stretch, do a harder braking test:
- The car brakes evenly - if it pulls to one side when braking, it’s a caliper or uneven discs.
- A pulsing pedal - warped brake discs.
- Squealing, grinding, a metallic sound - worn pads, or worse, discs worn down to metal.
- A soft, “spongy” pedal - air in the system or a brake fluid problem.
Test the suspension over bumps - deliberately drive over potholes, speed bumps, and cobbles:
- Knocking, rattling over bumps - worn anti-roll bar links (a classic, cheap fix) or wishbones and bushings (pricier).
- The car “floats”, rocking long after a bump - worn shock absorbers.
- Dull thuds - suspension mounts or rubber components.
Red flags - symptoms that disqualify
Some things mean I walk away from the car, or knock the price down hard:
- Thick white smoke that doesn’t clear - a likely head gasket.
- An automatic gearbox that “slips” - revs climb, speed lags behind.
- The check-engine light coming on during the drive (especially if the seller “doesn’t know what it is”).
- The car clearly pulling under braking - a brake system due for overhaul.
- Heavy jerking from a DSG gearbox - costly mechatronics repair.
- Engine temperature spiking or going into the red.
After the drive
Back at the spot, don’t switch off straight away. Leave it idling for a moment and get out to check nothing is leaking from underneath (oil, coolant). Look at the exhaust once more - after a dozen kilometres, smoke under load is more obvious. Check the warm engine’s oil level and its colour.

The most common buyer mistake
Test driving under pressure from a seller who talks non-stop, turns on the radio, and routes you along a winding road with no bumps. That’s no accident. You choose the route: a bit of town, a bit of open road, definitely some rough surface, and an empty stretch for a brake test. Turn off the radio, open the window, listen. The car will tell you whether it’s healthy - you just have to let it show you.
