How many km is 1 mile
1 mile is 1.60934 km. It is the same factor that converts mph to km/h, because miles per hour is simply one mile covered in one hour. The other way around: 1 km is about 0.62137 miles, and 100 km/h is roughly 62 mph.

Why you convert miles to kilometers
Cars imported from the US and the UK have their odometer and speedometer scaled in miles, not kilometers. When you look at one of these cars, the mileage shown in miles has to be converted so you know how far it has really travelled. Speed works the same way: 70 mph on a British motorway is about 113 km/h, not 70 km/h. Skip the conversion and it is easy to make a mistake that changes your whole read on the car.
How to read an odometer in miles
On a miles odometer every reading is lower than its kilometer equivalent, so the car looks less driven than it is. A car showing 90,000 miles has actually covered about 145,000 km. Always multiply the mileage in miles by 1.60934 before you compare it with cars from the European market.
