A paint thickness gauge is the most important tool of a car inspector, and the most commonly bought wrong. Half the buyers grab an AliExpress fake for €15, the other half get sold a PosiTest for €500 “because it’s professional”. Neither makes sense.
Here’s a practical guide: what to buy for €60-120, how to spot a fake, how to use it so the result actually means something, and what the gauge won’t detect.
Why have one at all
A paint thickness gauge shows how many micrometres (μm) of paint + clearcoat sit on the metal. This tells you three things:
- Whether the car was repainted (post-collision, minor damage, scratch repair).
- How deep the repair, light touch-up or filler after a crash.
- Where the repair was, by measuring multiple points you locate the damaged area.
Without a gauge, you rely on your eye. An experienced eye catches shade differences between a repainted panel and its neighbour, but only if the workshop matched the colour badly. Good repaints are invisible to the eye. A gauge catches them every time.
How it works technically
Two measurement technologies, briefly:
Magnetic (Hall / inductive)
Works on steel only. The probe emits a magnetic field, measures induction change as a function of distance to metal. Thicker paint = greater distance = bigger signal change.
Pro: cheap sensors, good accuracy on steel. Con: doesn’t work on aluminium, magnesium, composites (BMW bonnets, Audi A8, Tesla bodywork).
Eddy current
Works on non-ferrous metals, aluminium, magnesium. Induces eddy currents in the metal, measures their attenuation.
Pro: works on aluminium. Con: more expensive sensors.
Dual-tech (both in one)
Good gauges from CARSYS DPM-816 and up have both sensors and automatic substrate detection. You measure Audi steel fenders and a BMW aluminium bonnet with the same tool, it switches modes automatically.
This is the minimum you look for, because modern premium cars have an aluminium + steel mix (BMW E60 → Al bonnet, Al fenders, Al doors, steel roof; Tesla Model 3 → all Al).
What to buy by budget
Budget €60-90 (recommended for starters)
CARSYS DPM-816 PRE, €60-80, industry standard in Europe.
- Dual-tech (steel + aluminium).
- Automatic substrate detection.
- Range 0-2000 μm, accuracy ±3% (sufficient).
- OLED display, readable in sunlight.
- 2× AAA batteries, lasts months.
- Wireless zero calibration (place on plate, calibrates itself).
Nothing better at this price. Used by most professional inspectors. Lasts 5+ years of heavy use.
Standox CM-8825N, €45-60, cheaper alternative.
- Dual-tech.
- Weaker display (LCD).
- Accuracy ±4% (acceptable).
- 9V battery (less common in shops).
If you’re saving every €15, Standox is OK. For your first 20-30 inspections it’ll do.
Budget €130-200
TROTEC BB20, €130-170, German build quality.
- Better accuracy (±2%).
- Statistics function (remembers measurement series, average, min/max).
- Colour screen.
- 2-year manufacturer warranty.
Worth it at >30 inspections per month. Professional finish + statistics speed up the work.
Budget €400-600
PosiTest 6000 FN (DeFelsko), €450-600, pro pro class.
- Accuracy ±1%, best in class.
- Works on extreme thicknesses (up to 13 mm).
- Scan mode, drag across a panel, it shows real-time thickness graph.
- 1000+ measurement memory, PC export.
- 2-year warranty + service.
Don’t buy this at the start. PosiTest makes sense for:
- Professional inspectors (>50 jobs/month).
- Automotive assessors for insurance.
- Paint shops (quality control).
For side income / hobby, wasted money. The difference between a CARSYS and a PosiTest is undetectable in practice for 99% of inspections.
What NOT to buy
❌ AliExpress gauges for €15-25
They show random results. I tested it: same panel 7 times, readings 95, 145, 87, 210, 102, 158, 75 μm. Every reading different. No calibration, no temperature algorithm, plastic probe with no shielding.
If you buy a “Chinese gauge”, you might as well guess with a finger.
❌ “CARSYS” fakes
The first hits on Google for “CARSYS cheap” are clones for €20-30. Identical housing, different electronics inside. Readings ±20-30% off the original.
How to spot a fake:
- Price €20-30 instead of €60+.
- Seller on classifieds with low feedback (<500 reviews).
- No hologram on packaging.
- No calibration plate Zero (genuine has a blue 0 μm plate + foil 250 μm reference).
- Awkward English in the manual, instructions “translated” by Google.
❌ Dragons for €400 “Made in Germany”
I see ads “Made in Germany gauge, ISO certificate” for €400. CARSYS is made in Prague (CZ), has ISO 9001. Same thing, half the price. “DeFelsko” / “Elcometer” are American/German brands, but the €400 class models are PosiTest 6000-FS / Elcometer 415, the same models at €500+ from authorised distributors.
How to use correctly
Calibration before use
Every gauge needs zero calibration before the first measurement.
- Power on, select auto mode (substrate detection).
- Place on the zero calibration plate (uncoated steel or aluminium plate, from the kit).
- Press “Zero” or “Cal”.
- Verify on the 250 μm reference (usually red, foil). The gauge should show 240-260 μm.
If values are off by more than 5%, replace batteries or return the gauge (possible defect).
Where to measure
Not single readings, 10-15 points per panel.
Pattern for a panel (e.g. passenger door):

A single reading tells you nothing. A spread of readings shows the thickness distribution, if centre reads 120 μm and edges read 280 μm = classic repair on the door edge (key scratch, corner repair).
Reading the results
Standard factory values for European cars:

American cars usually have paint 30-50 μm thicker (less factory paint QC emphasis).
Premium cars (Audi A8, S-Class, Range Rover), often higher factory range, up to 200 μm on steel. Check values on a panel that doesn’t look repaired (centre of roof, e.g.), that’s your baseline for this specific car.
What the readings mean
- 80-150 μm = factory paint, no repair.
- 150-250 μm = minor repair (scratch, stone chip, spot repaint). Acceptable in a 5+ year-old used car.
- 250-400 μm = full panel repaint (parking collision, light prang). Flag to the client, but not a deal-breaker.
- 400-700 μm = light filler after a crash. Structural repair.
- 700-1500 μm = heavy filler. After a serious crash, possible frame correction.
- 1500+ μm = “halved car” or major structural repair.
The 400 μm threshold is my negotiation line. Above it I argue for a discount (“this panel was repainted, pro repaint cost €400”). Above 700 μm, I walk away, unless the seller offers 20%+ discount.
What the gauge does NOT detect
Important limitations:
1. Full panel replacements
If the workshop replaced the fender with a new OEM (without repainting), thickness reads normal factory. Signal = panel gaps (imperfect fit after replacement) and colour (difference between OEM and original).
2. Repairs without repainting
Dents pulled with PDR (paintless dent repair) or glued hot box, invisible to the gauge.
3. Structural damage
Cracked subframe, twisted auxiliary frame, pillar deformation under trim, the gauge sees only paint. Structure requires under-car inspection + body gap analysis.
4. Plastic
Bumpers and mirrors are plastic. Most gauges don’t measure on plastic. Some newer models (PosiTest, TROTEC) can in a special mode, but accuracy is lower.
Learn to use it in 30 minutes
Practice on your own car before going to inspect for a client.
- Calibrate zero on the kit’s plate.
- Measure 10 points on each of 8 body panels (doors × 4, fenders × 2, bonnet, boot, roof).
- Note values in a table (Notes on your phone works).
- That’s the baseline of your car. Uniform thickness on each panel = no repair.
After 15 minutes you understand how the gauge responds, what realistic factory readings look like, where minor touch-ups hide. After an hour you use it intuitively.
Rent or buy?
Rent if:
- You inspect 1-2 cars in your life (your own purchase).
- Tool rental shop in your city (~€10-15 / day).
Buy if:
- You inspect >2 cars a year (family, friends).
- You plan to earn on inspections.
- You want the tool to hand permanently.
Payback on CARSYS DPM-816 (~€70) = on the first inspection. If thanks to it you knock €350 off a repainted panel, it pays for itself 5×.
FAQ
Is every repaint a post-crash?
No. 150-250 μm are often non-collision touch-ups, stone chip on bonnet, key scratch, corrosion at a bolt. Above 400 μm = high chance of a collision. Check the context (panel gaps, hinge bolts, welding marks).
What if the seller says “that’s factory paint”?
Measure two panels at once, if the fender reads 250 μm and the bonnet reads 120 μm, they’re not “the same factory paint”. Show the seller the readings on the gauge display.
Will the gauge detect PPF / wrap?
Yes. PPF (paint protection film) adds 150-200 μm. If a car has factory paint at 120 μm + PPF at 150 μm = the gauge reads 270 μm. Without knowing about PPF it looks like a repaint. Ask the seller about PPF before you start measuring, or look for the film edge (thin line between PPF and unfilmed area).
Does the gauge work on matte black paint?
Yes. Matte paint is an extra matte clear layer (10-30 μm), the gauge picks it up just like normal clear. Factory values for mattes are 10-30 μm higher than standard. Tesla Model 3 Matte Black has factory 160-200 μm instead of typical 120-150 μm.
Do I need a calibration certificate?
For personal use, no. For a certified assessor (court, insurance), yes, annual calibration in an accredited lab costs €50-100.
Summary
Buy CARSYS DPM-816 for €60-80. Industry standard, dual-tech, sufficient for 99% of inspections. Payback on the first detected repaint.
Don’t buy AliExpress fakes, pricier models for starters, “Made in Germany €400” gauges.
